March-July 2020
It’s been so weird not playing live, but I’ve certainly played bass most days. I’ve been able to practice elements of music I don’t usually have time to look at. As I’m always trying to balance work commitments with family life, it means I don’t have the luxury of just playing the hours away like I did as a kid, so I’ve been enjoying playing bass again just for the love of bass. I’ve also been hanging with my family way more than I’m usually able to, so that’s a massive plus amongst all the negative.
I’ve not been posting a huge amount these past months. So far I’ve kept the online performance stuff down to a minimum as there is already a lot of great stuff out there. I didn’t want to just put things out unless there was a reason for it beyond, “just because I want to”.
One of the few I did do was this early lockdown experiment back in March.
I posted a clip of a short little funky groove on facebook playing bass and guitar.
which my mate drummer Westley Joseph later added drums to.
This was then picked up by Alex Wilson, Nolita Golding, Phillip Harper, Rodrigo Rodriguez who all added their take on things.
The finished product sounded like this.
Nice little bit of fun watching that process come together!
NEW BASS!!!!
My bass had been delivered during the lockdown but hadn’t quite made it to my place for a short while. By May I had it in my hands and I’ve played my new four string jazz every day since. It’s basicially a perfect match for my tone and style – must post a video soon. It was made with the loving craftsmanship of Jason Smith at the Fender custom shop.
I also took part in Fenders “technique of the week” series on instagram.

I’ll be playing a couple of dates with Squeeze in September which I’m really excited about cause I miss those guys. Not quite sure if the dates will stick in this ever changing covid situation, but for now here’s hoping I’ll see you live in September!
